Featured Game: Pumpkins VS Monsters

Last week we featured Polarbit's Reckless Getaway and this time we're featuring an interesting game that might have a familiar gameplay to some of you called Pumpkins VS Monsters. Don't be fooled by the somewhat childish or unusual looking screenshot above - this game is seriously addictive and allows hours and hours of fun. Pumpkins VS Monsters is essentially a game which is similar to Plants VS Zombies but instead of Plants Fighting Zombies, you use Pumpkins instead to fight against..well..Monsters. Its not a rip off from Plants VS Zombies but the idea of the game is the same but the gameplay mechanics are somewhat different. Full review after the jump.

The game features two modes - story mode and endless mode. Story modes takes you through a level-by-level story mode where after going through each level, you get to purchase items to help battle the hordes of monsters that come your way as your progress through the levels chart. Endless mode on the other hand is basically well - endless and you will go through waves after waves after waves of monsters with the objective being to stay alive as long as possible.

The game plays in a vertical perspective as oppose to the horizontal game perspective in PopCap's Plants VS Zombies. Game mechanics are very simple - you line up 3 or more pumpkins of the same color either horizontally or vertically in a straight line form or in a box form, as long as they are stacked together. Once you do this, you can then flick upwards to throw or launch the pumpkins towards the monsters to kill them. Some monsters may take more pumpkins before they can be brought down, so you have to repeat the process again until they are down.

You will get coins and sometimes a new pumpkin of random colour will appear for you to tap and collect them. Coins will allow you to purchase some items / weapons and also upgrade your pumpkin's destructive power towards the monsters. As you can see from the screenshot above you have different pumpkin colours, each with its own "stars" which denotes the level of destructiveness power that it possesses.

You will also notice 3 more items at the top, the first one on the left is a health item which allows you to "heal" the tree if you sustain damage from the monsters. Next up is the mine which will go "ka-boom" when a monster steps on it. The mine takes a few seconds to set in, so you should place it early on before the monsters actually reach that point. Finally, the almighty dynamite which will detonate the moment you place it, so you can quickly bomb those monsters instantly especially when you're in trouble with lots of monsters trying to destroy your tree.

That's all there is to the game much like Plants VS Zombies but this game is much simpler yet still allows you to have tons of fun playing it. The game plays very well on my Nexus One with no lags at all but doesn't play well on my Tegra 2 powered ASUS EEE Pad Transformer - I believe it isn't optimized for tablet gameplay. Don't get me wrong - its still playable but its somewhat slow, so I do not really advice you to play it on your tablet. Here are the full game features:

  • Action & Match 3 & defensive type of game perfect combination
  • Simple control, flick the pumpkin, attack monster
  • story mode, up to 75 Levels
  • 5 different worlds
  • Endless mode, guarantees you many long hours of fun
  • 6 different attributes of pumpkins
  • Shop System

Pumpkins VS Monsters is available for download for FREE and it is ad-supported, so you will get ads appearing at the bottom of your game screen but it doesn't really affect the gameplay much. Check out the gameplay video below and the download link after that to grab this game that I'm sure will provide you hours and hours of fun.
