Android Web Market Updated With New Screenshot Navigation

Google has updated the Android Web Market with a cool new screenshot navigation to replace the previous boring and a little hard to click square "dots" to navigate through screenshots. This new screenshots navigation has arrows on the left hand side of the screenshot to allow you to navigate to the next screenshot. Check out the video below that I compiled to get a better idea of how this looks like:

Clicking on the screenshot will naturally display the screenshot and also when viewing the screenshot, navigation options will appear at the top and you can even rotate the screenshot if for some strange reason the author decided to give you an upside down view or wrong angle view of the app screenshot. Don't take my word for it, head on over to the Android Market to check it out yourselves.

Welcome the new Swype killer on the block - the TouchPal Curve! The TouchPal Curve is the latest Android Keyboard that features swiping technology similar to that of Swype but with a bit of a twist - you can swipe your words...blindly! Yes you've heard that right, TouchPal curve allows you to swipe and also type blindly by having a very strong prediction and error tolerance mechanism and also studies your typing and swiping pattern. All this adds up to allow you to type and swipe blindly as you can see from the video above.

Before you get too excited, the TouchPal Curve is not available just yet but the TouchPal Keyboard which is a standard keyboard but with excellent prediction is already out in the market for free. It supports both English and Chinese typing so if you're looking to try out another alternative keyboard other than the likes of Swype and SwiftKey, do give TouchPal Keyboard a try.

Google Authenticator Updated - Adds Countdown Timer

Google has update the Google Authenticator Android App which now adds a countdown timer for the token number so that you know how long before the next token number takes place. For those who don't know what this application is for, the Google Authenticator is used in conjunction with your Google Accounts two-step verification option, that is if you enabled it.

Once enabled, when you login to any Google Services on the web, apart from your standard gmail username and password, you have to key in a "token number" that is generated by the Google Authenticator. It is basically an additional layer of security to ensure that your Google Account is safe since most of us have lots of private and important information, it is important to safeguard it from hackers or prying eyes. Head on over to the link below to get the updated Authenticator.

ASUS EEE Pad Transformer to receive Android 3.2 Update Tomorrow!

To all EEE Pad Transformer owners (such as myself), the wait is almost over as ASUS is set to release the Android 3.2 firmware update tomorrow! Just a quick recap, this new update will contain a new compatibility zoom for applications that are not properly designed for tablets, microSD loading (we're not too sure what this is, but its most likely something to do with the HoneyComb Gallery and other apps automatically loading images/videos from microSD) and some other optimizations to the honeycomb platform. Stay tuned!

UPDATE: It is out now! Check your settings page for updates, you should be getting it now!

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Receives Gingerbread Update!

Latest Update : Looks like Sony Ericsson was a few days early on the release notice, the actual update is actually a few days away, so to all of you X10 owners, it'll be out soon in a few days time. Just not yet.

To all of you Xperia X10 owners out there, Sony Ericsson has finally released the Android 2.3 AKA Gingerbread update for the handset today! This long awaited release may well be the last firmware update for the Xperia X10 as we're not sure if Sony Ericsson will update the handset through Ice Cream Sandwich (and beyond). Anyway, here are some things to take note of before updating :

  • User data, such as contacts, messages and more, saved in your phone memory will be overwritten. User data saved on the phone’s memory card is not affected.
  • DRM content will be overwritten.
  • The Backup and Restore app will be overwritten and cannot be used to restore data. Check out Android Market for alternative apps to back up and restore your data, such as MyBackup.
  • The Creatouch, Neoreader and Quadrapop apps will be removed.
  • Mediascape, homescreen operator customization and app tray operator customization will no longer be supported.
  • Moxier Exchange will be replaced by Android 2.3 Gingerbread Exchange support.

So there you have it. You've been warned. Make sure you've backup all your necessary stuff manually before you update. If you're an AT&T user (in the US) you have to wait a little longer as this update is only for unlocked devices. The update is rolling out slowly in stages, so if you haven't receive it yet - don't fret, it might take a while before you get it.

A Moment Of Zen With Spring Zen LWP

I've never been a great fan of live wallpapers to be honest - they eat up your battery life quickly, they don't look that great or interesting. Wait till you try out the Spring Zen Live Wallpaper - a super smooth live wallpaper which not only looks great but performs very well even on my age old Nexus One!

The live wallpaper has a nice 3D-ish look and feel to it - as you swipe your home screens, so does the perspective on the live wallpaper. Did I mention that it is FREE? There's a paid version of it called Spring Zen HD where you have full customization options for the live wallpaper and it only costs a mere $0.99. Try out the free version first and if you like, grab the full version.

Gameloft Releases GT Racing Motor Academy For FREE!

In a rather surprising move, Gameloft has released one of their top racing games called "GT Racing Motor Academy" to the Android Market for FREE! So what's the catch you ask? Well, this free version has in-app / game purchases unlike the paid version which is most likely something that Gameloft is probably trying to test out and see if their low-earning games can earn money through in-app purchases instead. This is pretty much what Glu Mobile is doing with their Gun Bros game. Here are the features of the game:

  • 26 manufacturers and 111 licensed cars to buy, drive and upgrade including the Nissan GT-R, Audi R8, top of the line Ferrari models and even the Ford Model T.
  • A new and elaborate physics engine particular to each car for the most realistic driving simulation on Android devices. Master your racing skills and tune your car just right to maximize performance.
  • A wide variety of tracks, from the official Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to urban tracks, speed rings and rally tracks.
  • A huge and fascinating Career mode: Pass license tests and enter to win increasingly prestigious racing events.
  • Play against drivers from all over the world with local and online multiplayer for up to 6 players. Reach the top of the GT Racing: Motor Academy leaderboards.

So if you're a fan of racing games, head on over to the link below to give GT Racing Motor Academy a whirl. Do check out the list of supported devices first before you get too excited. Both my Nexus One and EEE Pad Transformer were not supported unfortunately.

Death Cop Found As A Mecha Game

Apart from Destroy Gunners SP, there's actually another mecha game in the Android Market called "Death Cop" - Mechanical Unit. This game is also available for FREE and has some pretty nice features such as:

  • 3 Mechs with different features.
  • 16 missions in different locations combining three playing modes.
  • 11 powerful weapons: UZI, magnum, grenade launcher, sniper, machine gun, shotgun, flamethrower, rocket launcher, missile launcher, electric cannon and saw.
  • Amazing 3D graphics depicting very different locations.

Naturally, the game is ad-supported but hey, its a free game so you can't really complain right? I've tested the game out on my EEE Pad Transformer and it works flawlessly without any crashes. I was able to get through the first stage successfully unlike Destroy Gunners for some strange reason, even at the first stage itself, as I'm in action, the game would just crash and throw me a nasty force close exception. So if you want to try out another mecha game, give this one a try too since its free!

Marvel Entertainment has released the new Captain America: Sentinel Of Liberty game in the Android Market. This is their first ever game to be released (and hopefully with many more to come) and just in time for the First Avenger movie to be released in the Cinemas this week. Unleash epic combat moves as you take down HYDRA soldiers! Shield slide to traverse difficult terrain, perform takedowns in mid-air or on the ground, and launch your shield for long-range attacks.

Spectacular graphics and precise touch controls combine to give Sentinel of Liberty fluid cinematic action. Execute wall runs, slide under traps, and unleash devastating combo attacks with dynamic intensity you can feel.

Take down machine gun wielding enemies and maneuver around land mines on battlefields of WWII. Make your way through the secret HYDRA hideout and take down the evil Red Skull.

24 levels, each with multiple pathways and hidden areas, unfold over three massive episodes. Impressive unlockables, high score leaderboards, and tons of extra features add to the massive gameplay experience

The action of Captain America comes to life with an original story and script written by Marvel writer Christos Gage. Comic panels by Marvel artists Ron Lim and Christopher Sotomayor and a compelling original soundtrack complete the Captain America experience.

Supernova Article: How To Transfer Files Wirelessly Between Your Phone/Tablet To/From Your PC

We've all need to do it at some point - transfer files between our Android phones/tablets to/from our PCs be it music files, videos, photos, 3rd party APK files, etc. In most cases, the easiest way is to use the cable provided by your smartphone/tablet to connect to your PC in either mass storage or USB mode to perform the transfer. This is the easiest and fastest way to get your files across.

But what if you don't want to use the cables because its too troublesome to connect them over and over again? If you're on a wireless network (or even 3G connection), you're in luck. This guide will teach you how to easily transfer files wirelessly between your android device and your PC and vice versa. Full details after the jump.

Panasonic Raboo UT-PB1 E-reader goes official

Panasonic's own E-reader/tablet, the Raboo UT-PB1 was pretty much under the radar, even the specs were not known during its unveiling some weeks ago. Some of the specifications have been revealed and the Raboo UT-PB1 sporst a dual-core CPU of unknown origin, 8 GB of internal storage, standard Wifi, Bluetooth, microSD support. Unfortunately, the e-reader is well, not meant to be a tablet just yet, but it could probably change during the launch in Japan on the 10th of August.

You're also pretty much stuck with the XMDF file format which is proprietary to the Rakuten e-book store when purchasing e-books. We're not sure if this device will sell well, but Panasonic appears to be targeting e-book readers (naturally) and is trying to compete with Amazon's own kindle and also Barnes and Noble's nook reader. Head on over to the source below for a video as well if you're interested.

Gameloft Releases Farmville Clone Called Green Farm For FREE!

Now this may shock you a little - Gameloft (yes) has just released their new Farmville clone game called Green Farm to the Android Market for FREE! I find it strange for Gameloft, a company that develops high profile games such as the Asphalt series to release a game like this in the Android Market. Here are the features of Green Farm:

  • ADDICTIVE: Get hooked on farm life as you raise crops, trees & livestock.
  • UNIQUE: Earn coins to buy a variety of seeds, animals and buildings.
  • AWESOME: Make juice & cheese, or develop specialties like carpentry.
  • NEW: The fun never ends thanks to frequent updates!
  • And MORE: Customize your avatar, take on missions & utilize tractors, robots and more.

Unfortunately, Green Farm is not compatible with my Nexus One nor my EEE Pad Transformer and is only compatible with a subset of Android devices. You can head on over to the Android Market link below to grab Green Farm and see if your device is compatible with the game or otherwise:

Android Market Now Supports Multiple APKs Per App Listing

Google has just made it possible for developers to upload multiple APKs to the Android Market for each of their APP listings. Now what does this really mean? Its very simple actually - normally if an application has separate versions of their app, say one for tablets and another for smartphones, they will usually appear in two separate listings or items in the Android Market.

With this new ability to upload multiple APKs per App listing, developers can now use just one single listing for different versions, screen sizes or even chipsets of their applications. This means as a user, you no longer have to perform a search like "Swiftkey X Tablet" or "Swiftkey X for Tablets" but instead, "SwiftKey X" should return both tablet and smartphone versions of the application in a single listing.

Basically everything is under one roof and should also cut out the clutter on the Android Market during searches as well. Besides that, all the statistics, reviews and billing data are all aggregated across all APKs.

Gameloft Releases Silent Ops Trailer Showing Actual Gameplay

Gameloft has been releasing a lot of games and trailers lately and they have just released another trailer for their upcoming title called Silent Ops. The game is basically a James Bond-esque style gameplay that looks really good but we wonder if it'll play as well as it looks. No word on when this game will be released yet, but do check out this really nice trailer that Gameloft put together for your viewing pleasure:

Viber Now Out Of Beta, Released For Free On Android Market!

The Free Call & Text Messaging app Viber, which was previously in Beta is now in the final release version and is available for free on the Android Market! With Viber, you can make free calls and send text messages for free to anyone , anywhere with no extra charges as it utilizes your existing 3G or Wifi data connection. What's more, it is cross compatible with iPhone Viber users. This means, you can actually chat and send messages to both iPhone and Android users that have Viber installed on their phones! I've just tested the Text function and it works perfectly as I was sending to a friend of mine who owns an iPhone.

The app is similar to skype but unlike skype, it doesnt require an account to function. All you need to do on first launch is to key in your phone number and a text message will be sent to you to confirm your number and activate your account and that's it! Give it a try, I find it better than Skype since I have most of my friends (iPhone friends) on Viber already.

YongZH Emulators Available for FREE In SlideMe Market

Remember when you were kids you used to play Mario? You can relive those childhood memories thanks to YongZH who has released his range of emulators for free in the SlideMe Android Market. Now you might be wondering, why did he release it for free? While the emulators are free, it is only available for a limited time only (2 weeks, and it was released last week, so you have about 1 week more to grab it).

Apart from that, it was due to the emulators being pulled off from the Android Market, so since many people can't buy it anymore, YongZH decided to release it for free for a short period of time to make the already paid Android Market customers happy. Well he's also made those who have not paid for it happy, since practically anyone can get it for free. So do check out YongZH's range of emulators, they work very well even on Tablets I can assure you as I have tested them on my ASUS EEE Pad Transformer.

GAMEVIL Inc Releases Baseball Superstars II For Free!

Yes you've heard that right! Gamevil inc is releasing yet another game for free and this time it is the new Baseball Superstars II, fresh after releasing the RPG game Zenonia 3 some weeks ago. For those who have not tried the first version of Baseball Superstars, it is essentially a full featured baseball game (duh) with 7 different modes. The baseball superstar series has sold over 12 million copies since its inception back in 2002.

There aren't many baseball games around so you might want to try this one out whether you're a baseball fan or otherwise since it is free. Check out the download link below :

ASUS Ships Over 400k EEE Pad Transformers A Month

The current (since its launch) best selling Android tablet - the ASUS EEE Pad Transformer is being shipped in large quantities of over 400,000 shipments a month! That's impressive and this rising number will further catapult and increase the number of daily activations for Android as well.

With the upcoming Android 3.2 firmware arriving soon for the Transformer, shipments are expected to potentially hit over 500,000 or half a million by the 3rd quarter this year. In Malaysia here, it is still pretty much sold out in many places as potential buyers are left scouring and asking around when the next set of shipments will arrive.

Dolphin Browser HD v6.0 Released

One of the most popular alternative browsers, Dolphin Browser HD, has a new version and is now up to v6.0 which sports a new logo, new Dolphin Webzine feature and bug fixes, among other things.

For the uninitiated, Dolphin Browser HD is essentially an alternative browser shell which uses the stock Android browser engine for rendering of webpages but it contains a lot more features and customisations compared to the stock browser. Some of the features includes 3rd party Add-ons, gestures, webzine view, sidebar, speed dial and theme packs.

So if you're a fan of Dolphin Browser HD or want to give it a try for the first time, head on over to the link below and grab it from the Android Market:

Archos G9 Tablet Priced At $300, Ships In September

Remember the Archos tablet duos of Archos 80 G9 and Archos 101 G9 respectively? We've received information that the tablets have now been priced at $299.99 USD onwards for the lowest spec Archos 80 G9. Here's the full pricing list ranging from the lowest 8 GB (SSD) to the highest 250 GB (Seagate HDD):

Archos 80 G9 (8 Inch Tablet) :
  • 8 GB SSD - 1 Ghz - $299.99
  • 16 GB SSD - 1.5 Ghz - $329.99
  • 250 GB Seagate HDD - 1.5 Ghz - $369.99

Archos 101 G9 (10.1 Inch Tablet) :
  • 8 GB SSD - 1 Ghz - $369.99
  • 16 GB SSD - 1 Ghz - $399.99
  • 250 GB Seagate HDD - 1.5 Ghz - $469.99

As you can see from the price range above, Archos is trying to push the 250 GB Seagate HDD model especially on the 10.1 Inch version of the tablet which I think is a good move to generate sales but not so good for the consumers who prefer the slimmer and faster SSD version and also want a faster processor (the SSD versions of the Archos 101 runs on 1 Ghz processors only).

Nevertheless, they're competitively priced and would prove interesting on how the new Archos Duos will fare against the current crop of HoneyComb tablets in the market.

Minor Update To EEE Pad Transformer's 3.1 Firmware

ASUS has released a minor update to the HoneyComb 3.1 firmware for their best selling EEE Pad Transformer tablet prior to the upcoming Android 3.2 release. There's no official changelog at the moment but here are some of the changes that we've noticed:

  • New bootup logo with Powered by Nvidia
  • Upgraded GPS and Wifi driver versions
  • Slightly improved sound
  • Added Nvidia Tegrazone App
  • Option to hide keyboard dock notification / nag when not using the default ASUS keyboard
  • Splashtop App updated
  • Performance improvements especially in homescreen

That's pretty much what we've noticed so far. While the list isn't impressive, ASUS must be commended for releasing updates this quickly. We're still waiting for the Android 3.2 update to be released and this is expected to be out sometime end of this month or early August.

Galaxy Tab 10.1 Live Wallpapers For Your EEE Pad Transformer

Fellow XDA forumer Segnaro has managed to snagged two of Galaxy Tab 10.1's live wallpapers, signed them and made them available for EEE Pad Transformer owners. These wallpapers might work on other tablets such as the Motorola Xoom and the Acer Iconia Tab A500, but we can't be sure - so give it a try, who knows, it might work.

The two live wallpapers are the Blue Sea and Aurora wallpapers - both looks very nice but I still don't fancy live wallpapers just yet because somehow they slow down my EEE Pad Transformer's home screen swiping and even when bringing up the applications tab, everything seems sluggish especially with the aurora live wallpaper. But if you do fancy them, head on over to the XDA link here and give them a whirl!

Google+ Invite App

With all the buzz (no pun intended!) that has been surrounding Google's latest Social Networking Marvel, Google+, it's been quite hard to score an invite initially but now i'm sure some of your friends have already invited you to Google+ by now. However, not everyone is that lucky right? So if you're one of those unlucky ones, you should check out this cool Google+ Invite app that the developer made which should get you an invite fairly quickly. I'm not sure how soon but hey, at least give it a try since there's no harm right?

You just key in your email address and the reason (optional) and you're done. The developer even provided a privacy policy on the app itself just in case you're worried about your email getting spammed. So if you're interested, check out the Google+ Invite app here.

Android Market Reaches Quarter Million Mark

Yet another milestone has been set today - the Android Market has reached the quarter of a million mark or 250,000 total android applications available in the Android Market. This new milestone occurred after the new refreshed Android Market was released for Android phones carrying Android 2.2 and above firmwares. There's still a long way to go to reach the figures set by other app stores such as Apple's App Store.

ASUS: EEE Pad Transformer Android 3.2 Currently In Testing, To Be Released Soon

As I have predicted yesterday, ASUS will be releasing the EEE Pad Transformer Android 3.2 update soon as it is now undergoing the testing phase according to its twitter update here:

@ASUS is testing Android 3.2 on the #EeePadTransformer now - we hope to have it released soon!

ASUS Acknowledges EEE Pad Transformer Dock Power Issues, Fix Coming Soon

ASUS has confirmed and acknowledged that the EEE Pad Transformer has dock power issues when the tablet is connected to the keyboard dock, leading to some power drain issues and how well the attachment recharges. According to ASUS, the issue lies in the way that the company chose to configure its power settings in sleep mode.

But not to worry, a fix is expected to be released soon via a firmware upgrade, we're hoping that it'll be released together with the upcoming Android 3.2 HoneyComb update which brings in some more speed improvements and also the new zoom to fill feature that we mentioned about previously.

New Android Market For Android 2.2 Phones And Above

Google has released a new Android Market for Android phones with 2.2 (Froyo) and above. This new version of Android Market allows you to purchase books and rent movies, among other things and of course, sports a cool new interface which is similar to the one in HoneyComb but optimized for the smaller phone display. The video renting service is only available in the US at the moment, so if you're outside of the US, you won't be able to rent videos from the Android Market just yet.

Besides that, you also need to be in the US in order to purchase books from Android Market. The books purchasing and video renting are linked to your Google account so they are instantly accessible across your Android devices be it your smartphone or tablet device.

This new version of the Android Market will be slowly rolled out to your android phone, so don't worry if you haven't get it yet. The entire process is also automatic the moment you're connected to the internet, it'll auto update and you'll get it.

Alternatively, you can grab it here, but this is a rather unofficial method, i'm not sure whether there'll be any strange issues with the Android Market if you install it manually, so don't say I didn't warn you! Just download and put the APK in your SD card and install it off there. Click here to get it.

Motorola Xoom Gets Android 3.2 Update, Finally Adds In SD Support

For those of you who own a Motorola Xoom, do check your system updates in the settings section as Motorola has released the new Android 3.2 honeycomb update which finally adds in SD support and also the new zoom to fill screen feature that we've talked about yesterday. It'll be rolled out in stages so if you don't get it now, don't worry, it may take a while before the update trickles down to your region.

This will most likely be the last HoneyComb update before Ice Cream Sandwich is expected to roll out sometime in Q4 this year which is set to bridge the gap between phones and tablets.

Asus EEE Pad Transformer 3G Version Estimated At 499 Euros

The currently best selling Android tablet, the Asus EEE Pad Transformer will have its 3G version released soon and it is estimated to be priced at 499 Euros. This 3G version is expected to be released sometime in August but we're not sure on when it'll be released to the rest of the world.

The specifications are pretty much the same apart from the obvious 3G slot which was previously supposed to replace the microSD slot, but now instead, it is placed on the left hand side of the tablet, in between the left speaker and the volume rockers as you can see pictured above. So for those of you who are holding out on purchasing the Transformer, you might consider waiting for this new 3G version to be released for an extra connectivity option on the go.

Android 3.2 To Feature New Zoom To Fill Screen Functionality For Tablets

We've just received word that the upcoming Android 3.2 HoneyComb release will feature a new "Zoom To Fill Screen" feature which scales and fills up the screen for applications that do not officially support tablets. The end result will be more pixelated but you'll get to view the app in full screen and make full use of the tablet's real estate space.

While most applications look fine in HoneyComb, some will definitely prefer this new "Zoom to fill screen" feature which should have been released when HoneyComb was announced. The feature is similar to iPad's 2x zoom in feature that allows non iPad optimized applications to scale up 2x which also results in pixelation. Android 3.2 is slated to be released with a Motorola Xoom update first and then trickle down to the other tablets soon after.

Gingerbread Version Of HTC Desire Due Out End Of July

HTC is indeed keeping their promises and that they will launch Android 2.3 AKA Gingerbread for their flagship HTC Desire phones and the release date is set to sometime end of this month. No exact date was mentioned on HTC's facebook page but I think since Desire owners have been waiting so long for this, no harm in waiting a few more weeks now right? We still don't know what HTC removed or stripped from the Gingerbread build but I think as long as Gingerbread is there in the Desire, everyone should be pretty happy.

FieldRunners HD now supports tablets!

The popular tower defense game FieldRunners which was release for Free on Thursday at the Amazon App Store and $0.99 at the Android Market has received the most important update of all - support for tablets! Both the Android Market and Amazon App Store will receive this update and if you don't see it now, give it time as it may take a while before the update trickles down to the stores. So head on over to the Android Market and grab the update or if you haven't bought this game already, its $2.99 now on the Android Market or $1.49 on the Amazon App Store if you're in the US.

Motorola Xoom To Be Getting Android 3.2 Update Soon?

It appears that Google might be releasing the Android 3.2 update for the Motorola Xoom anytime soon. There isn't much news at the moment on what's on the Android 3.2 update, just a few such as support for 7 inch tablets, Qualcomm processors, general UI speed improvements, stuff like that. Overall they're mainly tweaks to the OS since Ice Cream Sandwich is the main focus which should be out in a few months time. Let's wait patiently shall we?
