Mozilla Team Hard At Work On Firefox For Tablets

The Firefox team are currently hard at work in trying to bring a tablet-specific version of Firefox to Android Tablets. Currently the version of Firefox in the Android Market is not tablet optimized to take full advantage of the amount of real-estate space available on the tablet. This new tablet-specific version of Firefox will include all the familiar elements of the desktop version of Firefox including the awesome bar, tabs and such. The UI will also be greatly improved and matching with the minimalistic design language of HoneyComb. No news yet on when this version will be released but it looks great so far form what I'm looking at. You can check out the source link below for more pictures not shown here.

Screen On Toggler 1.5 Released

I've just released version 1.5 of screen on toggler - my own "flagship" app that I've been working hard over the past 1 year since its development. New in this release is the ability to set a custom screen timeout setting via the main application itself. You can specify the timeout in either seconds or minutes, so you can actually set a screen timeout setting of say 35 seconds or 6 minutes if you wish.

For those who have no idea what Screen On Toggler does, let me give you a quick primer - Screen On Toggler is an app that is both Android 2.x and HoneyComb compatible and allows you to easily disable your screen timeout setting (basically means your screen won't timeout) via:

  • The screen on toggler main application itself
  • Long-pressing on your Android Device's search button and selecting "screen on toggler" (if your device is equipped with a search button)
  • By bringing down your notification bar and tapping on the application icon to enable/disable your screen timeout.

That's basically what the app does - its simple, straightforward, easy to use and I'm sure you will find yourself using it often when you're reading an ebook, surfing the web or just about anything you can think of. No longer will you need to manually set a longer screen timeout setting just to read that ebook of yours - just use screen on toggler! Screen On Toggler is available for FREE and it is ad-supported - if you love the app, please consider donating at least $2 and above to remove the ads from the application. Head on over to the download link below to grab it from the Android Market:

Fancy Running Android On Your Machine?

Ever wanted to run Gingerbread or even HoneyComb on your PC? Now you can, thanks to the team at the Android-x86 project which is an open-sourced project dedicated to porting Android to run on your PC. The easiest way to try out Gingerbread or HoneyComb on your PC is to use the famous Virtual Machine software called Virtual Box by Oracle (Formerly by Sun MicroSystems).

The Android-x86 project allows you to download Live CD versions of Gingerbread and HoneyComb and load them up through VirtualBox - all running from your Windows or Linux OS! With the Live CD you can also try it out on your actual physical (non-virtual) PC environment if you feel like it. All you need to do is to burn the ISO using a CD Burner and boot from the CD during your machine startup and you're ready to go! Of course, the easiest way is still to mount it from VirtualBox and boot it directly from VirtualBox. You can also install it to your physical hard disk (or virtual hard disk in Virtual Box) if you want to make the changes in the OS stick.

I've successfully booted through HoneyComb through VirtualBox but did not play around much, just launch a few apps and that's it. To use the mouse in HoneyComb, you must first disable the mouse integration by going to to "Machine" menu in VirtualBox then click on "Disable Mouse Integration" and you're good to do. To let your mouse out of the virtual environment and back to the physical OS, press the "Host" key (by default it is your right CTRL key).

I'll leave the rest of the exploring to you guys. Head on over to the download link below to grab the ISO and start exploring. Have fun!

Fujitsu To Join Tablet Wars With Waterproof Tablet

Looks like Fujitsu is ready to join the Android Tablet Wars that have been brewing between the big contenders of ASUS, Acer, Samsung and Motorola with their own Arrows Tab F-01D tablet. The Arrows Tab F-01D tablet is no ordinary tablet, it packs a WXGA display, TI IMAP4430 1 Ghz Dual-Core Processor running on Android 3.2 HoneyComb and it is..waterproof! Other specifications include 16GB of onboard storage, micro-USB support and microSD card slot.

No word on how water proof the Arrows tablet is and there's also no mention on the pricing, but its interesting to see and note that all the major Android Tablet manufacturers have different sets of features for their flagship tablet products and now we have a waterproof tablet from Fujitsu. I guess we'll know more soon enough.

Adsense Account Disabled

I just got the bad news this morning when I woke up - my adsense account has been disabled. This is sad news indeed and I have since filed an appeal for the "invalid activity" reason that was given by Google Adsense team that led to my account being disabled. I'd like to thank everyone who have supported this site, but should my adsense account be reinstated, please only click on the ads that you are interested in (and not go on a "click spree"). Thanks :)

As you may have noticed then, the ads from the sites are gone. In some of the articles, there will be blank spaces as placeholders for these ads. Don't worry, the site will still continue to operate as this site is part of my passion and dedication to all things Android. If you wish to support the site, I'd greatly appreciate any donation amount of $2 and above (as paypal takes a small cut). Thank you in advance.

Galaxy Tab 7.7 Photos Leaked Ahead Of IFA 2011

Samsung is set to unveil the Galaxy Tab 7.7 inch pictured above at the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA 2011) in Berlin this week. Android Life was able to get their hands on two photos of this upcoming 7.7 inch Android Tablet from Samsung.

The Galaxy Tab 7.7 inch is expected to sport a cool Super AMOLED Plus display with a dual-core Samsung Exynos processor which is clocked between 1.0 Ghz and 1.5 Ghz, a 1024x600 display, internal storage between 8 GB and 64 GB, a 2 MP front shooter, 3 MP rear shooter, Wifi and HSPA+ and Samsung's TouchWiz UI.

As you can see from the photo above, you will notice the capacitive buttons and these buttons are normally used by Android 2.x and not HoneyComb but it is still possible that this new Galaxy Tab 7.7 might just run HoneyComb as the photos taken are prototype units so the final unit may or may not have these capacitive buttons. Its rather strange seeing Samsung trying out all the different sizes. We have seen 7", 7.7", 8.9", 10.1" tablets all from Samsung. Would 7.7" tablets make a difference compare to the usual 7" ones? We'll find out when Samsung releases it to the world.

CyanogenMod 7 On HP TouchPad!

The team at CyanogenMod is currently working hard to bring CyanogenMod 7 to the suddenly-popular HP TouchPad tablet which was discontinued by HP a while back. Don't believe me? Check out this video of CM7's first bootup on the HP TouchPad:

The guys at RootzWiki received a letter from the CyanogenMod team on their work. At the moment it is an alpha build and here's the letter that was sent to them:

Hey Internet/RootzWiki--

Here is some (older) touchpad progress from Friday. The Cyanogenmod team wanted to share it with the public as a blatant publicity stunt to bring attention to our need for a few more touchpads (for developers currently working without them).

As you can see from this quick demo, we've been working hard and have made progress. Since this video was created last week, the build has been more "tabletized" (tablet tweaks added, etc.), lvm support has been added, and 2d hardware acceleration should appear very soon.

The touchscreen driver issue is now the focus of our attention.

Our ultimate vision is to create a *multiboot* solution where the end user will be able to boot into WebOS, Cyanogenmod, and/or other OSes. This appears to be very possible, and we have discussed several potential implementations with our new friends in the WebOS development community to make it easy for an end-user to set up.

For the moment though, we need about 4 tablets, as we have talented and experienced developers who cannot contribute effectively due to a lack of hardware. If you have an extra touchpad and are willing to help the cause, please let us know in the comments below.

A BIG CAVEAT-- PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR ETAS. For the uninitiated, this is the #1 rule for Cyanogenmod. It will certainly be a long while before our goals become reality. Our goals incidentally are not connected with any bounty-- we are motivated to do it right, not do it fast.

And now the obligatory shout outs-- Thanks to rootzwiki and all the devs and everyone else who are collaborating and contributing to this project. You know who you are, you.

The CM team

PS- Yes, this is gingerbread (Android 2.3.5). Everything you see, except for bootie the bootloader (a great kid's show btw), was compiled from source.

Samsung Announces LTE Versions Of Galaxy S II And Galaxy Tab 8.9

Samsung Tomorrow, Samsung Electronics' Official Global Blog has announced the LTE Versions of Samsung Galaxy S II and also the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9" Android Tablet. Here's what JK Shin, the President and Head of Mobile Communication Business has to say:

"With the introduction of GALAXY S II LTE and GALAXY Tab 8.9 LTE, we will take the capabilities of these devices to a whole new level. LTE redefines the user experience made possible by these devices and opens entirely new possibilities in terms of content viewing, sharing, quality and connectivity”

“This is a milestone in our commitment to lead the charge in 4G mobile telephony around the world, both in terms of back-end network solutions for service providers and the development of powerful consumer handsets ,”

-JK Shin, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business

In a nutshell, you will be getting screamingly fast 4G network speeds as long as your network supports it on your Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone and also Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 Android Tablet. For the Galaxy S II LTE Version, there's two major changes in the specifications.

Firstly is the bump on the screen size from 4.3" to 4.5" - making it a tad larger in real-estate screen space than usual and also the bump in the dual-core processor's speed from 1.2 Ghz to 1.5 Ghz. Other than that, everything else is pretty much the same including it's 8MP Rear shooter and such.

On the other hand we have the Galaxy Tab 8.9 inch which is just like the name implies, has an 8.9 inch screen and measures at 8.6mm only and weighs at a low 470g. The Galaxy Tab 8.9 is also equipped with LTE capabilities but no word on the specs yet and whether it'll receive the same 1.5 Ghz Dual-Core Processor as the Galaxy S II LTE Edition. No word on the release date and pricing either, so watch this space. We'll let you know when we know more.

Featured Game: Pumpkins VS Monsters

Last week we featured Polarbit's Reckless Getaway and this time we're featuring an interesting game that might have a familiar gameplay to some of you called Pumpkins VS Monsters. Don't be fooled by the somewhat childish or unusual looking screenshot above - this game is seriously addictive and allows hours and hours of fun. Pumpkins VS Monsters is essentially a game which is similar to Plants VS Zombies but instead of Plants Fighting Zombies, you use Pumpkins instead to fight against..well..Monsters. Its not a rip off from Plants VS Zombies but the idea of the game is the same but the gameplay mechanics are somewhat different. Full review after the jump.

Google Videos For Rooted Users

When Google announced Google Videos a while back, they also mentioned that the movie rentals feature would only work for non-rooted users. But this is no longer true thanks to an XDA Member who managed to modify the Google Video's APK and allow rooted-users to play rented videos straight from the Android Market!

The DRM Licensing is not affected so you'll only get what every non-rooted user gets - the ability to rent and play videos from Android Market. If you're interested, head on over to the link below to grab this special modified APK of Google Videos.

First Ever HTC Sensation ROM With Full Dual-Core Support

XDA Recognised Developer mike1986 has released the first ever HTC Sensation ROM that has complete dual-core support. What this basically means that this ROM allows you to take advantage of every single bit of that dual-core processor in your HTC sensation by improving the overall performance during multi-tasking and also in applications or games. Besides that, the CPU can be overclocked up to 1.83 Ghz (1.29 Ghz by default) allowing an even smoother experience with your Sensation.

The Android Revolution HD does NOT veer from the overall stock look and there are absolutely no visual changes. If you want, you could also get the "no-sense" version which essentially strips off some of the Sense UI elements from the ROM if you prefer an ever more "stock" feel although some applications such as the dialer from the HTC Sense will still remain. That's not all, the ROM supports other HTC devices too. More details after the jump.

Acer Iconia Tab A500 3.2 Update Delayed To September 10th

August 25th came and gone and still no sign of the promised Acer Iconia Tab A500 3.2 update from Acer. You might be wondering what happened there? Well Acer has been encountering some GPS settings issues during testing and they are pushing the 3.2 update release back further till September 10th to sort out all the issues that they've been facing.

While this may seem like a blow to those who have been waiting patiently for the update, it is better for Acer to work out the kinks first than to release a buggy update and then bugfix it later on right? So for those who own the Iconia Tab A500 will have to be a little bit more patient before you can get your hands on the latest HoneyComb 3.2 update.

Workaround For Low Flash FPS on the ASUS EEE Pad Transformer

If you own an ASUS EEE Pad Transformer and are facing a low fps issue on Adobe flash when playing flash videos, there's now a workaround for that. This usually occurs in a few custom roms and may also occur in other devices other than the EEE Pad Transformer. In normal circumstances or cases, flash should be played at the full 30 fps and above but in certain custom ROMs, the flash player apparently plays at a low 10 fps only and an XDA member has found the possible solution/workaround to that.

You need to be rooted for this fix to work and you can check out the source link below for more information and the download link to the fix as well as a youtube test link to find out how many frames per second your flash player is outputting if you're unsure if your tablet is facing the low fps issue or not.

NVIDIA Unleashes Official TegraZone Site

NVIDIA has finally unleashed their official TegraZone site which is essentially a companion site to the Tegra Zone app on your Tegra Powered Android Device. The site contains links to games, products, news and community forums on all things Tegra powered. Each game listing on the site will take you to the Android Market link so no worries there - you won't have to download yet-another-market-app.

As you can see from the screenshot above, the site is very well designed and is very easy to navigate as well. There aren't many Tegra powered games at the moment, but I believe this will change in the future as NVIDIA allows developers to submit their game to see if it has what it takes to meet the criteria to be on the Tegra Zone. They will inform the developers regardless of the outcome of the decision, so if you're a game developer, you might want to submit your tegra powered game if you think it belongs there right at the Tegra Zone.

As part of the launch of the Tegra Zone site, NVIDIA is giving away FIVE Acer Iconia Tab A500 HoneyComb tablets throughout the first month. Check out the community tab in the Tegra Zone site for more info (US & Canada Only).

Fresh from their latest smash hit Reckless Getaway, Polarbit is now working hard on their next upcoming title called "Tank Rider". Tank Rider is a 3D top-down birds-eye view tank game where you "ride" a tank and navigate through maze-like levels and collect coins and possibly powerups too. Along your "journey" you'll be dodging and destroying enemies as you navigate through the "maze".

There aren't much details yet so far but Polarbit is sure to be releasing this game to the Android Platform. I can't help but noticed that this game looks a bit like Tank Hero, one of the games in the Android Market which I believe is also based off a Nintendo Wii game of similar gameplay. However Tank Rider could have both single and multiplayer style games, so we'll know more once the game releases. For now, enjoy this sneek preview trailer:

    Samsung Announces Galaxy Smartphones Hierarchy

Samsung has introduced to the world the Galaxy Hierarchy which makes perfect sense now what those "Y-M-W-R-S" stands for. Starting with the entry level Galaxy "Y", this segment is targeted for teenagers and youngsters who want to get their hands on their very first phone. Pretty much everything in this segment is in low resolution from the LCD screen to the camera.

Moving up one level, the Galaxy "M" is the "Magical" mid-tier level which is targeted at professionals in an attempt to lure Blackberry users to the Android platform. Specs include a larger LCD screen display, a more powerful 1 GHZ Processor, improved battery life and a higher quality camera.

Next up is the Galaxy "W" or "Wonder" tier which is to me the middle tier of the hierarchy which sports an 800x480 LCD display with a 1.4 GHZ Single Core Processor. Its specifications will be something that fits right in the middle and its not too cheap and not too flashy either.

One more rung up, the Galaxy "Royal" sports a powerful 1 Ghz Dual-Core Nvidia Tegra 2 Processor packed with a WVGA Super Clear LCD Touchscreen. Sounds fit for a royal king doesn't it?

At the top of the hierarchy is Samsung's Flagship Galaxy S series, with the latest Samsung Galaxy S II currently reigning as the supreme smartphone of the year. And there you have it. Samsung's hierarchy looks good and appears to cater for pretty much every market segment that you can imagine of. Well done Samsung. HTC has some serious competition in their hands!

The popular still-in-beta swype keyboard has been updated and is now in version 3.25. New in this release are gestures that allows you to do text manipulation such as cut/copy/paste/select all with ease. How does this work? Its very simple - you swype from the bottom left icon (the "i" icon) to the character "c" to copy, "x" to cut, etc. Next up is the application gestures where you can direct the selected text to an your favourite applications such as google maps or twitter for instance. To direct the text to the application, simply swype from the "swype" icon to "a" (to select the text) then to "t-then-w" to send the selected text directly to twitter!

Another feature is the addition of the personal dictionary management where you can manage the words that you add to your swype dictionary straight from the settings menu. Check out the video below which shows you how the new gesture features work:

Android Market For Phones Updated, Brings Some New Features

Google has updated the Android Market for Smartphones, bumping the version up to v3.1.3. So what's new in this version? Since the launch of the new Windows Phone-esque style look and feel on the Android Market, there has been some minor updates here and there for the Android Market.

This new version however brings in two big features: a new +1 for apps & games and the most important feature of all - Pin number for purchases! This feature allows you to set a 4 digit PIN code that you have to enter before the purchase process goes through. I would say this is by far the most useful feature to be added to the Android Market since it was included in all officially supported Android Device. This prevents your friends/families or even total strangers from making purchases without your knowledge - especially if your phone was stolen. Kudos to Google for adding this in!

You should be getting the auto-update on the Android Market by now, but if you are not getting it just yet, you can manually install this new version by downloading the APK file in the link below and then installing it from your Android phone. Do make sure you tick your Settings > Applications > Allow Unknown Sources checkbox otherwise you won't be able to install it. You don't need to be rooted to install this, so don't worry. Just install and replace the existing Android Market.

Minor Update For ASUS EEE Pad Transformer Is Now Live!

The minor update that is scheduled to be released today for US and WW region devices for the ASUS EEE Pad Transformer is now up! It is currently downloading on my Transformer as I type this out. Just a quick recap, here are the changes to expect in this new update:

    • New build number
    • New Wifi build number
    • New GPS build number
    • New mobile dock build number
    • New bluetooth build number
    • Keyboard on/off switch when docked added.
    • Selectable cursor type option added (arrow or circle).
    • Mouse cursor trackpad movement reversed.
    • Official Netflix Support For US region devices only.

I believe the option to select between the arrow or circle cursor type is the most welcome one of all after we were forced to use the circle cursor unless a USB mouse was plugged in when the Transformer first got the Android 3.2 update a while back. Apart from that, the reversal of the trackpad movement is also a welcome move which made me wonder why it was reversed in the 3.2 update in the first place - perhaps an oversight on a bug of sorts.

In any case, if you're still not getting the update automatically yet, try to go to your Settings > About Tablet and click on the Check For Updates button to manually check for updates if it isn't auto-updating by now. If you're still not getting it, you'll probably have to wait a while more as it may take time to propagate to your region.

There's also a dock update when you boot up your Transformer and see your homescreen for the first time after the firmware update. You will see a triangle shaped exclamation mark, tap on it and tap on the notification to start the mobile dock update if you have your mobile dock connected. Do NOT unplug your mobile dock during this update. It will only take about a minute or so. Once done you will see an icon that looks like a "downloading" icon on the notification bar. Tap it to see the message and it should read that the update is completed and you may now use your mobile dock.

I have also checked out the new selectable cursor type - it allows you to choose between the normal cursor mode or a gesture mode. Cursor mode is back to pre-3.2 mouse cursor with the touchpad scrolling back to the way it used to be - swiping your fingers from top to bottom will scroll down and vice versa. You will lose the ability to do pinch to zoom gesture which was introduced in the initial 3.2 update.

On the other hand if you set the cursor type to gesture mode, you will get back the round cursor which came with the 3.2 update for the Transformer. You can do pinch to zoom gestures and the touchpad scrolling is the reverse of the cursor mode - swiping your fingers from top to bottom will scroll UP instead or DOWN and vice versa. So make sure you stick to one mode otherwise you may get confused as to swipe up or down to scroll up or down (and vice versa).

Google Brings Android To Your Big Screen Television

Previously at the Google I/O conference Google announced that they will be bringing the Android Market to Google TV. Today they've announced a preview of the Google TV Addon for the Android SDK which allows developers to develop Android apps for TV, optimize existing mobile and tablet apps for TV and distribute them through the Android Market.

There will be an upcoming OS update to HoneyComb and this will make all Google TV devices to be Android compatible. It is important to note that the Google TV Addon does not have all the features of Google TV but it allows the emulation of the Google TV and build apps using the standard Android SDK Tools. It'll be interesting to see what kind of applications will be brought to the big screen, More details at the source link below:
